Everyone knows that good things come to those who wait, but sometimes you don’t want to wait. Like, for instance, when you’re waiting for the number on the scale to creep down, whether it’s because you have a big reunion in a month, you’re headed to the beach in just two weeks, or your friend just confessed your ex is going to be at that party next weekend. Whatever the reason, it’s not wrong to want to lose weight fast. But you do want to do it in a way that’s healthy, and that won’t guarantee the pounds come right back as soon as you resume your usual diet and exercise habits. A successful plan for weight loss is often one that is tailored to an individual's lifestyle and other personal factors. McManus and her colleagues found that the breakdown of calories from protein, fat and carbohydrates doesn't matter for weight loss. They followed 800 people assigned to different calorie amounts from these food categories. After two years, the participants had dropped about 9 lbs. (4 kg), on average. Few diet studies have followed such a diverse group — the McManus study involved people ages 30 to 70 with a wide range of incomes, from cities in the northern and southern United States — for more than a year.
In people, dieting also reduces the influence of the brain’s weight-regulation system by teaching us to rely on rules rather than hunger to control eating. People who eat this way become more vulnerable to external cues telling them what to eat. In the modern environment, many of those cues were invented by marketers to make us eat more, like advertising, supersizing and the all-you-can-eat buffet. Studies show that long-term dieters are more likely to eat for emotional reasons or simply because food is available. When dieters who have long ignored their hunger finally exhaust their willpower, they tend to overeat for all these reasons, leading to weight gain.
These diets and methods might never come right out and admit that or say you just need to eat less calories (partly because it doesn’t fit with their gimmick, partly because people don’t want to hear that they have to [GASP!] count calories or [GASP!] eat less of them, and partly because it’s hard to make money off of something that is simple, obvious and free.)
Yeah, it might be a bit much – but it’s just what I’ve always done and I think part of it might be from habit – plus, as I stated, I am still able to make progress – slow, but some progress anyways. I will try and stretch out my deload spacing to maybe 6 or 8 weeks. Part of the problem is that this winter (I live in Chicago) has been long and cold – which isn’t fun when working out in a garage at 5 a.m. – I think that all by itself might be causing part of the sore/dragging/worn-out feeling (which I usually associate with a need to deload). Why? “A lower ratio of carbohydrates and fats and a higher ratio of protein would help preserve lean body mass and promote the breakdown of fat mass,” she says. Your ratios might look something like 50 percent protein, 25 percent fat, and 25 percent carbs, although if you’re working out super hard, says Feller, you could decrease protein to 40 percent and increase your carbs to 35 percent for more easily accessible energy.
