In addition to improving your health, maintaining a weight loss is likely to improve your life in other ways. In the laboratory, rodents learn to binge when deprivation alternates with tasty food — a situation familiar to many dieters. Rats develop binge eating after several weeks consisting of five days of food restriction followed by two days of free access to Oreos. Four days later, a brief stressor leads them to eat almost twice as many Oreos as animals that received the stressor but did not have their diets restricted. A small taste of Oreos can induce deprived animals to binge on regular chow, if nothing else is available. Repeated food deprivation changes dopamine and other neurotransmitters in the brain that govern how animals respond to rewards, which increases their motivation to seek out and eat food. This may explain why the animals binge, especially as these brain changes can last long after the diet is over.
Eating healthier takes a little more time and a little more money. When you're not focused on being health conscious, you can easily satisfy your hunger by going through a drive-thru or grabbing something from the vending machine. When you are focused on your health, or a specific fitness goal like weight loss, you're better off to prepare your own food than to eat out, making it a more time-consuming process, especially if you live somewhere like a food desert.
Second, weight anxiety and dieting predict later binge eating, as well as weight gain. Girls who labeled themselves as dieters in early adolescence were three times more likely to become overweight over the next four years. Another study found that adolescent girls who dieted frequently were 12 times more likely than non-dieters to binge two years later.
I am 62, female, icky 217 pounds, 5 foot 6, on 130 mcg of levothyroxine for hypothyroid, and no other health issues. I have weighed between 117 and 125 all of my life until 10 years ago when the hypo began and was not recognized by me. I gained all of the weight as my thyroid slowed down. I play tennis several times a week for several hours each time. I do strength training every other day and have strong arms and legs. I walk and jog. And you can see muscles when I flex my arms. 🙂 But — aggggg — I now have a belly and want it gone, gone, gone.

I used to have pretty slim legs, but then I started getting into fitness and would workout 5-6 times per week. After reading your blog posts, I realized that I was doing all the exercises to bulk up legs (skipping, HIIT, loads of squats and lunges, and would also do a CrossFit class when I could). This resulted in me getting pretty thick calves and thighs, which was awful for me because my mum is Chinese and so her legs are naturally very slim. I’m currently saving up to purchase your eBook (uni tuition comes first, haha), but just wanted to ask you if I could continue to do resistance training ~4 times per week? Would that increase bulkiness? I’ve also started power walking almost every day, so I can’t wait to see results. The resistance training exercises I would do would come almost exclusively from the ones you post on your blog and Instagram.

The scale is not necessarily your friend. You may want to lose fat – but the scale measures muscles, bone and internal organs as well. Gaining muscle is a good thing. Thus weight or BMI are imperfect ways to measure your progress. This is especially true if you’re just coming off a long period of semi-starvation (calorie counting), as your body may want to restore lost muscles etc. Starting weight training and gaining muscle can also hide your fat loss.
